Industry Day February 2010

On Friday 19 February the ESS Industry Day was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. More than 400 representatives from European business and industry took part and gained information about how to get involved in the construction of the ESS.
The presentations given during the day can be accessed via the Industry Day website

What ESS can do for industry
Neutrons are a deeply penetrating but non-destructive form of radiation that can pass through several centimetres of dense material.
On the one hand they can be used for radiographic and tomographic imaging of complex engineering components. On the other hand they can provide detailed atomic-level information on materials in special environments, under extremes of pressure, temperature or magnetic field.
Neutron diffraction is routinely used to investigate the underlying crystallographic structures of novel, technologically important materials including pharmaceuticals, multiferroics, magnetorestive materials, hydrogen in metals, fuel cells, catalysts, superconductors and biological materials.
